Sugam Pokharel
has finally hit the Nepali music screen with his third album “Sutra”,
an album awaited eagerly with high expectations. It was a privilege
for me to receive an opportunity to interview Sugam Pokharel about
his new album. Nervousness and anxiety just didn't struck me because
it was my first interview but also because I was tracing my path
for a rendezvous with a very famous singer. But this wonderful artist
instantly made me feel at home and kept me asking for more...
Here
are some excerpts of the interview.
1.
What are your expectations for your new
album “Sutra”?
I think it will be a success. It has been two years
since my last album “Highway” got released and I have
been working hard for such a long duration on this album, and hard
work pays.
2. How would you describe the album?
"Sutra" is different from my previous albums
because two or three songs on this album are in different style
and also because I've tried out new things in Sutra.
3. At a rate of one to ten, how do you rate “Sutra”
compared to your previous albums?
I am very positive about this album. In fact it is
the best album that I have created so far and I rate it ten out
of ten. The reason for this is because while making this album I
have gathered more experiences than before. Through this album,
I have found my own way in music and have devised my own style.
4. Why did you name the album “Sutra”?
The name of my first album, “Shunya”
(zero), reflects the starting point of my music career. “Highway”,
my second album's name mirrors my further journey of gaining experiences
and experimenting with music. Finally the name of my third album,
“Sutra”, reflects the discovery of my own “Sutra”
for music, my own music style, “the Sugam style”.
5.
What kind of listeners does your album target to?
I'm trying to reach out to all kinds of people with
this album but youths are my target group because they are the ones
who buy my album.
6. How would you describe the songs on your album?
Which of them is your favorite and why?
The songs are sentimental and revolve around the
happiness and sadness that love harvests. Unlike my previous albums,
I have songs with different themes like the song “Saathi”
which speaks about friendship. They are based on my own experiences
in life. I do not have any specific favorite song because I like
all the songs.
7. Do your songs possess a common theme or message
that you want to convey to the listeners?
My songs deliver the message to always remain positive
to my listeners. Love rules the beautiful world and to gain success,
one needs to overcome every barriers in one's life.
8. Have you tried any kind of new instruments, lyrics,
styles, effects or other things?
I have never been very fond of rock music; however,
when fused with traditional music I find it very good. Among many
of the new things I have tried on this album, one of them is the
style of rock fused with classic traditional music. I have also
tried a new instrument, the mouth harmonica, which has given a different
and interesting stamp on the songs. I have also done live recordings
and have recorded my songs in different studios according to the
song's requirement.
9.
Why did you choose Samjhana Audio-Video (SAV) to produce your album?
I chose SAV because it is not only a promising company
but also has wonderful music albums to its credit. When they approached
me with an offer, I accepted it immediately.
10. As an artist, how important is the media's support?
The support from media and fans play a vital role
for me as a musician. I have always received immense love and support
from the media and I hope for the same too.
11. From the experiences of your musical voyage,
how do you advise the emerging and upcoming Nepali music artists?
I advise them to have confidence in what they do
with a passion for music and knowledge about it. Most of all, one
should have belief and faith in God.
12. Do you have anything to share with your fans
on a personal level?
Yes. Next year I and my wife want to start a family
because we think that will be the right time.
13. Any messages for your fans?
LOVE NEPALI MUSIC!!!
14. How do you feel about the present condition of
the country?
I
wish that PEACE returns soon in the country. I want to be able to
walk on the street without being scared of a wrong happening.
After this candid talk with Sugam, it is clear that “Sutra”is
