Artists for Freedom

-by Sampada Malla

Updated on Thursday, April 20, 2006

"Any form of art will only bloom to its fullest when there is absolute freedom of expression" -anonymous.

This Wednesday morning in Swayambu, singers, music associates, VJ's and RJ's gathered together to show their full support in the current republican protest in Nepal. Singing songs related to peace and freedom, they also lighted candles around the Swayambu Stupa.

At this time of major crisis, they voiced together, "We are not associated with any political parties nor are we revolutionists. But we are revolutionists of our voices, words and music. We want and love freedom and peace." While some were distributing pamphlets of "White banner campaign" to the guests, the others were busy tying the symbolic white bands on their hands. Then they silently stood and showed their white bands that represented peace and freedom. According to Prashan, an RJ of Kantipur FM, these white bands are created to raise voices for the achievement of peace, freedom and non-violence.

Music artists like Nima Rumba, Lochan Rijal, Abhaya, Sudin Pokhrel, Avash, Jems Pradhan, Firoz Syangden, Niraka & Manoj KC of 1974 AD, Yogeshwor Amatya, Surendra Man Singh, Dipesh Kishor Bhattarai and Robin Tamang, Hemant Sharma & Mad Zone and popular VJs and RJs were expressing their full support on this republic movement.

"Until Nepal becomes a republic country, we will not loosen the knots of these white bands. This is only the beginning. We are all set to make our movement successful. "Said Manoj KC of 1974 AD. After the lights were lit, all of them sang a song created in the group, "Peace, freedom, non-violence. This is our desire…."

"This is the period when the country is searching for a solution. And when the whole nation is in the state of agitation; words, music and songs should also rise in her favor." marked singer Avash.

This New Year has been a different experience for every Nepali living inside and outside the borders of Nepal. If the insiders are welcoming their new year amid the day by day uprising public protests organized by the major political parties of Nepal, people outside Nepal are also suffering through immense mental conflicts to visualize their country in such an anarchical and chaotic situation.

At this time of major crisis, our national new year has not brought the same amount of happiness, excitement and enthusiasm as the past years previously did. ‘May peace prevail in our country soon’ –This New Year, everyone’s voices seem to be the same.
