What next after the King’s statement?

Media People on Future Nepal

By Sampada Malla
Updated on 2nd May, 2006

After the Royal statement addressed on Monday, the Nepalese are celebrating their success on reinstating freedom in the nation. We requested couple of our renowned media personalities to put forward their views on the below mentioned question.

What major changes do you expect in Nepal and what should be the role of the political parties and citizens?

Read their opinions and voice yours too.

Veemsen Lama
(Singer)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

This time, the people’s movement was different than during 1990 because now we have experienced the failed democracy and have also learnt for it. As tourism is one of the vital sources of income of our country, I hope this sector will flourish immensely. I think the views and ideas of the youngsters should be appreciated to experience positive changes in our country.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should know that they are the key personnel of the nation like the parents in the family. They are the people who should look after the people. They should utilize their political power for the development of the country. They should encourage the jobless people and provide them some sort of job. They should understand their responsibilities.

On the role of the citizens-

After living abroad for six years, I have experienced vast differences between the people living there and here. In Nepal people have lots of spare time and they pass it by watching television, playing cards etc but in developed countries most of the people work a lot. If they don’t work then they don’t get paid, even elder people work. We should learn from them. In order to develop our country, we should work very hard.

Kamal Man Singh
(Singer, Composer, Music Video Director)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

Many people have sacrificed their lives in this public movement. Nepal should live up to their expectations. The Maoist problem should be solved as soon as possible. With the reinstatement of democracy and peace, every sector of the country will be developed.

On the role of the political leaders-

Political leaders are the ones who lead the country strategically. In the previous democratic years, only limited people gained through the system. The leaders should learn from their previous experiences. They should have a feeling that their country is their home and work accordingly.

On the role of the citizens-

The citizens should be politically aware and should carefully observe the activities of the political leaders and notify them with their mistakes. We should support the political party that works best for the country’s benefit. Instead of carrying political flags on rallies, we should carry national flags.

Payal Shakya
(Miss Nepal 2004, Currently in Australia)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

Nepal is a beautiful country. We should realize the core reasons of violence that has created chaos in our country. It is due to lack of employment opportunities, quality education, gender discrimination and poverty. Therefore we need to solve these problems with a positive attitude as soon as possible.

On the role of the political leaders-

I firmly believe that every management has its system to follow and these systems are created by the government itself but it is seen that the government people themselves do not follow their system. Therefore first of all politicians should be stable with a selfless feeling to serve their motherland.

On the role of the citizens-

A citizen is the foundation of a country and plays an important role in a nation’s development. We should support the management of the country by following its rules and laws. If everyone follows the same track, then, there won’t be any negative energy and the result will be non violent.

Sugam Pokharel (Singer)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect the constituent assembly to be held soon. I hope that healthy competitions will flourish and peace reinstates in our country soon.

On the role of the political leaders-

The political parties should move according to their twelve point understandings and bring the Maoist in the mainstream. After that, they should provide economical help to the martyrs’ families. The politicians should now be aware that their every action is being strictly observed by the people.

On the role of the citizens-

We should be politically aware and urge the Maoists to conduct peaceful movements.

Santosh Subedi (DJ)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect Nepal to grow economically. The laws of our country are only limited in the constituent books. They should be practically used without any traditional mentality. Nepali music should be globally released and the media field should be developed.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should completely stop corruption and make every action of theirs transparent. They should not bend any laws according to their requirements and should realize that they must be answerable to the people.

On the role of the citizens-

First of all, we need to be politically aware. If today’s peoples’ movement was for democracy, the next movement should be for anti corruption. I also participated in the protest and was glad to realize that people have become a lot politically conscious which is a good sign.

Asif Shah
(Music Video Director, TV Presenter & Producer)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

Everybody has been demanding peace but now we need to actively participate in bringing peace in our nation. Every person should be able to do their works freely without any close downs and curfews.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should lead the country towards the right path. They should learn from their past experiences, correct their mistakes and work according to people’s wants and desires.

On the role of the citizens-

I have seen many people participating in the protest without even knowing the causes behind it. This is wrong. They should be politically aware while pursuing their individual professions.

Sarun Tamrakar
(Singer, Currently in Australia)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect a good future for the upcoming generation without any bandhs and curfews.
I expect better employment opportunities, better lifestyle and better laws.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should bring peace in our country, stop corruption, make better laws, plans and implement them. They should utilize our natural resources that can benefit us and seek long terms solutions to our numerous problems.

On the role of the citizens-

We should try to respect each other and share innovative ideas. We should not support any politicians for personal benefits or motivate anyone to do so. Every individual should utilize his or her skills for the nation's benefit. We should set an example for the next generations.

Bikash Rouniyar
(Photo Journalist, Kantipur Publications)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect the country to move forward by creating the most democratic constitution. The law should be for the people by the people.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should be able to balance every crucial aspects of the country and create and environment for the Maoist to participate in the upcoming elections and stop insurgencies. They should conduct constituent assembly soon. I know it's not an easy task for them but a great challenge to move steadily in the democratic path.

On the role of the citizens-

We should safeguard our democracy and make sure that the leaders act responsibly. We should constantly keep them in check. We should realize we are the ones responsible for our country's future.

Pooja Gurung
(Music Video Director, TV Presenter & Producer)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect peace and freedom to flourish in the nation. Until this victory, the media was facing different censorship problems and the concerned government was constantly acting as barriers on its freedom in delivering true news to the public which I hope will never rise again.

On the role of the political leaders-

They should focus on providing quality education to the future generations so that they are not forced to leave their country to pursue their further studies. Besides they should be completely transparent about their works and the flow of every penny of the nation.

On the role of the citizens-

They should now be politically aware whilst pursuing their individual professions.

Malvika Subba
(Miss Nepal 2002, TV presenter)

On major changes to expect in Nepal-

I expect the youths to hold a fruitful position in the nation with quality education and better employment opportunities. The concerned authorities should conduct activities in utilizing the untapped and powerful young skills and talents for the nation’s benefit.

On the role of the political leaders-

The political leaders no doubt have a great role to play as they are the ones in the policy making level and represent the citizens. They should fulfill people’s justified demands otherwise this kind of movement will rise again. The nation’s power is in the people’s hand. They should work immediately in solving the Maoist problem and create a peaceful and liberal nation.

On the role of the citizens-

The people should be politically aware and voice their views and opinions in the right place. People should come forward with different ideas and visions beneficial for the country. They should actively participate in elections and young people should join politics.

Paribartan Nepali
City : Kathmandu
Country : Nepal
Opinion : To say that "we want peace" is easy but we need to work hard for it. Let’s all join hands for Constitutional Assembly (CA) and head for a democratic and Republic Nepal. We don't want our taxes to be used as personal income by a group of people i.e. Monarch family. We want it to be used for development purposes of Nepal. If CA is held, peace will be established Let's all awake the leaders time to time. I wish for a prosperous and rapidly developing Nepal and for that we can contribute from our side. Singers can sing, writers can write and DJ's can organize theme party on pro-democracy. Lets remember the song,”GAUN GAUN BATA UTHA YO DESH KO MUHAR PHERNA LAI UTHA.HAAT MA KALAM HUNE HARU KALAM LIYERA UTHA.HATMA KEHI NAHUNE HARU AAWAZ LIYERA UTHA...”

Bikash Maharjan
City : London
Country : UK
Opinion : I expect political stability in the country which is the base for everything. Political parties and leaders should have vision about the country and work with best integrity. The Nepalese should know their rights and stand up for their
rights. They should learn to love their country.

Binod Shrestha

City : Sydney
Country : Australia
Opinion : First of all, I love Nepal. Only the parties and king is not the problem for Nepal. The main problem is the Moist. Peace should be given first priority. I want to request the 7 parties, king and the Maoist to bring peace in Nepal because Nepal has become a talk issue in every part of the world. Even in Australia, everyone is curious to know more about Nepal. What answer will we give them?

Girish Khatiwada (Singer)
City : St. Louis
Country : USA
Opinion : It is imperative for all the citizens of Nepal to understand that all of us are equally responsible for the lives we have lost in our march towards democracy and peace. It was our biggest mistake of not watching our politician's previous moves. We had a "I don't care" attitude towards it. Now it's the lesson we have learnt. We should be very careful and watch every steps the leaders take. But at the same time, we should watch our steps too for a better tomorrow.

Sashina
City : Hounslow
Country : UK
Opinion : All Nepalese should be together and help each other. I hope there will be peace soon as any normal country. I hope everyone will get equal respect and there will be no discrimination.

Nikita Devkota
City : Kathmandu
Country : Nepal
Opinion : Once a man asked me, 'What do you prefer- roses or guns?' I replied roses but i couldn't give any substantial reason at that time. But now I have realized that for the sake of peace, we must choose roses. I don't know about the roles of the political parties or citizens but they should be honest and they should think of the countries more than themselves.

Sudarshan
City : Lalitpur
Country :Nepal
Opinion : The political leaders should bring peace in our country, stop corruption, make better laws, plans and implement them. They should utilize our natural resources that can benefit us and seek long terms solutions to our numerous problems.

Razzz
Age : 20-25
City : College Station
Country : USA
Opinion : The problem won't get solved until and unless the feudalistic structure of RNA)Royal Nepal Army) is demolished by dissolving it and forming a new one incorporating the Janasena(People's Army).

Dawa Sherpa
Age : 26-29
City : Kathmandu
Country : Nepal
Opinion : When the king is out of power, I believe Nepal is out of a huge burden to pay salary and allowances to the royal family members which can be better utilized for development projects. Political parties should not play the filthy games they had been playing since more than a decade. This is an opportunity and they should utilize it fully and make the Nepalese people proud for their support and sacrifice. We must always choose the best, qualified and capable leaders and not just select them on the basis of their contribution as several times these types of people have been found incapable.
Citizens should be aware of what is going on in our country and across the globe. They should elect the capable leader of any caste no matter they know them personally or not. If we can master this discrimination then only we can choose a better leader for better Nepal.

Mahesh Adhikari
City : Kathmandu
Country : Nepal
Opinion : First of All, peace should be restored in Nepal.

Maha Rai
City : Dharan
Country : Nepal
Opinion : A major change in Nepal is only possible when Nepal is declared a democratic republic state. It will itself bring radical political changes and the political leader and parties of Nepal should try to clean their bad image and live up to the dignity. They and the educated Nepalese should make everyone realize that politics is not a dirty game but the way towards development and prosperity of Nepal. Today’s citizen should make strong political system and create platform for the young generations. Then we will certainly rise! Long live Nepal.

Rina
City : Kathmandu
Country : Nepal

Opinion : On major changes to expect in Nepal –
I hope there may be a tremendous change in Nepal after the King’s announcement. Peace is the crucial thing for the current situation of Nepal. I hope this change will once again make Nepal a “Peaceful Country”. There will again be a very good relation between the King and People.

On the role of the political parties-
There should be unity among the parties. They should swear not to repeat the mistakes they did before. Political parties should have the feelings of “My Country” at first rather than “Me and My Family”. Corruption should be strictly prohibited. They should try to solve the Maoist problem through the meetings and should include Maoist in government. They should make the country a peaceful country.

On the role of the citizens-
A new charm has again lightened on Nepalese people’s face. Nepalese citizens have now proved that they need their country and freedom rather than autocracy and King. Now every citizen should be aware about his or her rights and responsibilities. After all, Nepalese citizens have now proved that nothing is impossible if there is unity.Nepalese people have won. Cheer Up!!! And Jai Nepal !!!!!!

Rajendra Shrestha
City : Tokyo
Country :Japan
Opinion : I think this is a very special opportunity for the Maoist and the political parties to make Nepal a better country. Maoist should also stop their war, have a table talk and make a solution because the country has gone much backward. The new government should immediately take actions to maintain and stabilize peace and harmony in the country.

Bickey Khan(Tahir Khan)
Country :Nepal
Opinion : After the King's statement, I expect peace in the country. The power of people is stronger than guns. I request the Maoists to stop the war.

Roshan Tamu
City : Sydney
Country : Australia
Opinion : All Nepalese should face the truth that there is no solution without bringing the Maoist into the mainstream political group other wise once again majorities of general Nepalese will face the same fate of betrayal from these political parties and the King. The King should be Out of the palace as soon as possible and remain a ceremonial king of the nation. Baburam and Prachanda should come back from hideout, speak to the people and listen what they want otherwise they will face
the same consequence. They should move according to the nation of the people. I believe in democracy. It will not only bring happiness to all of us but will also bring new ideas on how to develop the nation and make Nepal a prosperous and developed nation. Girijajee, please do not die to bring your relatives into power. Bring new talents like Gagan Thapa and give them opportunities to develop the nation. I am confident that within few years of time he will run the nation better than anyone else I've ever seen. Because of these insurgencies, many qualified people are working overseas and wasting their skills and time. All Nepalese, please don't let your nation disappear into the dark shadow of hell, war and crime. Let it be a nation of heaven where peace messenger Gautam Buddha was born. Prachanda and Dr.Baburam, please stop killing any Nepalese even if they are enemies of your thought or oppose your view but bring them into consideration that you might be able to change their views. Killing Nepalese means killing our own brothers and it is too much for our mother Nepal.

Prahcan
City : Keshtrapur,Chitwan
Country :Nepal
Opinion :Yes, It is we people's victory. It is on the hand of the new generations with talent, advance brain and creativity to take the nation forward Political leaders should create policy in the country's benefit.

Mahesh Panta
City : Kilgore, Texas
Country : United States
Opinion : We are again going to have "wonderful" prime minister: Girija! The parties that denounced so much about Girija now are supporting him; and we Nepali people are just supporting such leaders. Was this movement only to gain the parliament for handful of corrupted leaders? Why do we have to live in the same periphery when we know it is so much corrupted? Why can we not bring about the real change?

This is not going to lead any progress.
